"Yeah, I have a question." Leah asked.
"How did Rami do better than say...Isaac. Or Joe and Roy? The two in that match list lost before Roy and Joe."

Merlin smiles slyly. "Ah, good question Leah. You see, Rami and Axelle received third place because they both knocked each other out in their match. Rami's strong poison effects and clever use of summons and the environment, as well as Axelle's ingenuity and resourcefulness to catch Rami off guard just as assured victory was within his grasp."
Merlin lets out a chuckle. "I know it might not seem fair, but a majority of you fought fairly straightforwardly and had predictable attacks. Think of your matches and how many times your attacks were dodged or avoided. The two that scored above Rami and Axelle used the same level of resourcefulness as them, except they actually survived past their matches all the way up to the final match."
"...So then, you're saying that I rank below Roy and Joe because not only were my attacks not as inventive, but I also lost in the second round?," Isaac asks dryly, not at all happy with Merlin's answer.
"Unfortunately, yes. You relied on sheer power and mastery of water to defeat Zain. In the end it might have won the fight for you, but that would be only because of your prodigal nature. You also acted to confidently and underestimated your opponent, as I'm sure you now realize.," Merlin replies.

"And i can accept scoring where i did, I did kind of work on the fly and my performance against Leah was weak as i was being too soft at first. It makes sense. Likely I'm there because i adapted to things after my plans went to hell well enough to rate...though admittedly I'm shocked i got 4th. i saw myself at 5th at best." Roy says. "Am i close in my self analysis?"

Merlin nods. "Pretty much. Though you are tied with Joe so feeling more like 5th isn't too bad of a guesstimation."

Illyana smiles at Isaac "Don't worry, you'll learn all sorts of tricks this summer. You'll come back the most inventive guy in our class." she chuckles "I know because you're stubborn and now that you know that was your weakness you'll work hard to fix it."
Axelle had a happy little smile "Well, third is good, and better shared." she says

Isaac still has an frustrated expression, but he nods at Illyana's words. "Thanks Illyana." Merlin may be right, but the fact remains that I lost to a coin flip. Next time, I won't let it get to that point. I won't let luck decide my battles for me.
"Ah, well, we passed.," Lance sighs to Mortus at the fact that neither got a distinguished position in the standings. "I'd probably have lasted longer if I hadn't got paired up against Joe in the second round."
"I...I am honored to receive such a position.," Rami says with a bow to Merlin. "I felt my performance was much lower than you give me credit for. Thank you."
"Good job Rami!," Kami says from over by Zain's bed. "At least someone from our village got up there! Your dad will be proud!" She then looks back at Zain, slight disappointment on her face. "Looks like dad was right. I need to take things like this a bit more seriously if I want to get farther ahead."

Sapphire listened, first to what Merlin had said and then to the other conversations around her. "Congrats, Rami," She said, pleased her friend had gotten recognized. It wasn't like the rest of them had done anything with magical objects, aside from Roy's staff, and even then, he'd been the one to summon something. It was just as good to see that they were being graded on more than just power, though she wondered if that had applied to her and Zain, seeing as they'd both gotten the actual way they'd placed in the tournament.
