So, for a bit of a fresh start after a long break Noble and I both thought it would be a good idea to start a new RP, so some of our new members can get into an RP without having to read a lot. So without further ado, here’s what we were thinking:
This is based off a series of stories aura wanted to write, had planned out and never really got to finishing. We used to just refer to it as “Creatures”, however if you have an idea for a better name go ahead and share it.
All throughout history, different cultures have had storied about mysterious creatures that have become things of legend and folklore. Dragons, vampires, chimeras and mermaids are all examples of such beings. As far as the majority of humanity is concerned, these tales of human encounters with these mythological beasts are just that; myth. At best, they are cases of mistaken identity. This however is not the case. These encounters are the result of the world where these creatures come from brushing up against our world, giving the creatures a chance to hop over to the human world and interact in some form with it.
This idea takes place a little bit in the future, not hover-craft-laser-gun future, but far enough that there have been new innovations in things like communications, surveillance etc. Due to a cataclysmic event that took place in the creature world, the two worlds have begun to slowly merge into one. This has caused uproar in the creature world, sparking much debate over how they should react. Some search for a way to stop the merge, others wish to embrace it. Many creatures have also chosen to travel to the human world because of this, their reasons being anything from going to seek power over humans, to trying to stop the later, to their own personal reasons. For the most part however, the creature world has been the only one to be greatly affected by the merge; the human world is mostly oblivious of the fact that anything has happened at all. Only a small amount of people are even aware of the creature world: the humans that have formed pacts with a creature, and a company known as Walsh Corp. But we’ll get back to that; first, a bit of a description of the creature world:
The creature world is not as technologically advanced as the human world; i.e. no cars, TV’s etc. In place of advanced technology they have magic. For example, there is no need to create a telephone when you could easily use a spell that lets you contact a person. The creature world is home to beings we consider to be mythological or make-believe. Some beings such as Gods, originally came from this world. It inhabitants include, but are not limited to: dragons, unicorns, mermaids, anthropomorphic frog people, Odin, dwarves, elves, tengu, wizards, dire/giant animals, etc. you get the idea. Their equivalents to countries are the land owned by each group of creatures. For example: the elves have their own land, as do the dragons etc. Within these lands, the societies vary depending on what race lives there. One thing all the societies have agreed on, is that they should take a humanoid form for matters such as politics between different races. A unanimous decision was made long ago that the form the wizards/sorcerers had (human) was the most convenient and their language easiest to learn. In other words, all creatures can take a humanoid form as well as their natural form. In this humanoid form it is common for them to retain some of the features of their natural form. So a dragon might have scales even in its humanoid form. Other magical abilities of a creature vary on what type of creature they are. The ability to take a humanoid form is almost always the first power a creature loses when coming to the human world, because for them it is a utility spell, and not essential.
The process of crossing over from the creature world to the human world is a complicated ritual, and usually only the strongest of creatures can complete it properly without any mishaps, and even if they have successfully completed the ritual a creature will not have all of its powers it would in the creature world. There are three different classifications of existence of creatures in the human world:
Stage One: The creature cannot be seen by average humans in any form, and are only visible to humans with a pact with a creature. They have only minor traces of their full power and can only do small things to affect the human world. Ex: A sylph could cause a small gust of wind to blow, but not create a hurricane. This is the weakest classification.
Stage Two: The creature has a physical form seen by average humans. It is usually something similar to their true form. EX. a phoenix might look like a parrot to average humans, or a mermaid might look like a normal human. Humans in a pact with a creature see them as what they really are. In this stage, a creature has more of its powers than in stage one, however they are still much weaker than in their own world.
Stage Three: The creature comes to the human world in its true form, which can be seen by all. Though they retain far more of their power than in the lower stages, they are still weaker than in their world. Only the most powerful creatures are even capable of coming to the human world in this manner, and doing so is far from easy or inconspicuous. In this form, a literal rip forms between the worlds that the creature comes through. Needless to say this is not any way to sneak in.
Stages one and two are the most common forms a creature exists in the human world. As you can tell when a creature comes to the human world he loses some of his power. This is where humans come in. If a creature forms a pact with a human—makes a magical bond/contract between the two of them—he re-gains all the powers he had in the creature world. The reasoning behind this is that forming a pact with a human cements him to this plane. A human in a pact with a creature gains some form of power from the creature, be it an enhancement of their natural skills such as the senses, or even a magical ability. Both parties tend to benefit from a pact, and both also try to look out for one another not only because they have a bond, but because if either should die the other will lose their power.
You: How do creatures form pacts with humans if most can’t be seen by them Inky?
Well here’s how: Some humans have the natural ability to see creatures. The cause of this is mostly unknown however it is believed to be the result of ancient humans traveling to the creature world. Their descendants would sometimes also have the ability to see creatures.
You: Oh, ok. But Inky, what’s that Walsh Corp. thing you mentioned before?
Ah yes. Walsh Corp is a large company in the human world. To average humans, it is nothing more than a company that makes a little bit of everything, kind of like GE. To humans with pacts with creatures, and creatures, they are a group to be feared. Walsh Corp is also one of the few organizations of average humans that know about creatures and the humans tied to them. They see both as a threat and work to eliminate them by hunting down the humans who form pacts with creatures. They have no way of seeing creatures themselves, and therefore have to rely on finding their human partners to get to them. They are constantly on the lookout for humans who recklessly use the abilities they get from their creatures, often searching areas where paranormal activities have been sighted.
And that's what we've got. I consulted aura on the details of the world for typing this up. He'd come on and post however, he is currently stealing my PS3 to play Skyrim DLC. We'll be able to get him on especially since one of our new members sees him at least once a week too XD. Feel free to ask questions if you need clarification. Aura had this very well thought out so if something doesn't add up we should have an explanation lol
