there is a system of tirangles that determine who would win in a fight between two equal leveled fighters of different classes in fire Emblem.
The weapons triangle:
easy enough: lances beat swords, swords beat axes, and axes beat lances.
bows are just out there and do extra damage to flying units ^^
the magic triangle
light beats dark, dark beats anima, anima beats light.
anima (elemental magic) has it's own triangle too ^^
fire beats wind, wind beats thunder, thunder beats fire
Terminology:
attack power: the amount of damage you do with a weapon
defence: how much a waepon doesn't hurt you
magic power: how powerful your spells are
resistance: how much magic doesn't hurt you
speed: how fast you attack
skill: chane of hitting a critical hit
vitality: your 'health bar'
luck: effects many things (your chances of avoiding hits, landing criticals etc.)
avoid: chance of not getting hit.
accuracy: chance of hitting
all pretty simple no?
staffs can do a number of things, from heal, to teleport, to bring back the dead! (a mad rare staff...)
***We are NOT having acctual stats. we are just making referance to these to show the differences in the different classes so someone isn't making a General who is faster than the speed of sound.

WEAPONS! YAAAY!
ok the basics for most weapons:
there are few different types:
bronze iron steel silver
those are the basic types of weapons with bronze being the weakest and silver being the strongest. it obviously, takes less skill to weild a bronze weapon, than it does a silver one, so the 'level' of your character does impact what type of weapons they use. the weapons also have levels E-SS, E is bottom, SS is top (this like character levels is not something characters will mention in the game, it is a way for everyone to guess skill level.)
weapons break in Fire Emblem. bronze weapons, though the weakest, last the longest. and Silver, though the best, break sooner.
swords and lances have an additional type, the 'slim' weapons. these are weaker, but more accurate than the iron weapons, and are stronger than bronze weapons. they are usually used by the ladies.
here's a list of basic weapons that should be the main weapons of the characters:
Swords:
bronze sword-E iron sword-D steel sword-C silver sword-B bronze blade-C iron blade-B steel blade-A silver blade-S Wind edge-D (this is a ranged sword. It can attack from at close or distance. though it would seem as if it would do magic damage, it does not. it still does physical damage, and is not wind magic) Storm Sword-B (ranged) Tempest Blade-S (ranged) Slim sword-E Killing edge-C (breaks easier but has a high critical hit chance) Longsword-D (extra damage on mounted units) Armorslayer-C (extra damage on armored units) Laguzslayer-C (what do you think it has extra damage on? *laaaguuuz*) Venin Edge-D (is poisoned, but has a lower chance of hitting. Somehow only the evil get these...)
Axes
bronze axe-E iron axe-D steel axe-C silver axe-B bronze poleaxe-C iron poleaxe-B steel poleaxe-A silver poleaxe-S hand axe-D (ranged) short axe-B (ranged) Tomahawk-S (ranged) hatchet- E (ranged, ax equivalent of a slim weapon) Hammer- D (extra damage on armored units) Killer Axe-C (breaks easier higher critical rate) Laguz axe-C (extra damage on laguz) Venin axe-D (poison, less likely to hit. only baddies have)
Lances
bronze-E iron-D steel-C silver-B bronze Greatlance-C iron greatlance-B steel greatlance-A silver greatlance-S javalin-D (ranged) short spear-B (ranged) spear-S (ranged) heavy spear-D (extra owchies on armored units) slim lance-E Ridersbane-D (extra damage on mounted units) Laguz lance-C (I think you get the point by now...) killer lance-C (more breaky, more critical) venin lance-D (poison, less likely to hit, only baddies)
Knives
bronze dagger-D iron dagger-C steel dagger-B silver dagger-A bronze knife-E (ranged) iron knife-D (ranged) steel knife-C(ranged) silver knife-A(ranged) Peshkatz-S (ranged) Stilletto-A (more critical damage, less uses) Beast killer-D (only extra effective on beast tribe laguz)
Bows
Bronze bow-E iron bow-D steel bow-C silver bow-B iron longbow-C( can shoot farther) steel longbow-B (can shoot farther) silver longbow-A (can shoot farther) bowgun-E (close range and long range) crossbow-D (close+long range) Taksh-C(close+long range) Aqqar-B(close+long range) Arbalest-A (close+long range) killer bow-C (extra critical, less useage) laguz bow-D (laaaaguuuuz) venin bow-D (poison, less acurate, only baddies)

Specialized weapons:
ha, ya'll though we were gunna' be jerks and only let you have those weapons. HA! we aren't that strict. it's a common theme in the game to have specially forged weapons, however, this is expensive, so don't give all of your characters these.
also, there are special weapons out there, you can have these if you want, just get them approved.some examples are the flame lance, which deals fire damage. there are many weapons from the games we didn't use, so feel free to explore the wiki and ask for those.
also, there are certain weapons that certain families can use no matter their weapon level. these could be members of families who have a special bloodline weapon or weapons specialized only for royals. (one example of this from the games is Merric being able to use Excaliber at low weapon levels...for those fire emblem nerds out there lol)
or invent your own legendary weapon ^^
